76 minutes
2007
Like the untitled piano piece from 2004, this piece represents an interesting point of arrival or opening up. Specifically, I found myself here exploring a much longer duration than ever before (and doing so with a spatial approach to rhythmic notation). Nearly all of my previous pieces were between 5 and 25 minutes—and most between 10 and 20. Here was an opportunity to paint on a larger canvas. I found this to be quite freeing. Space between sounds had become an increasingly frequent component in my work. Now that sense of space took on a new dimension. I found increased liberation from concepts of narrative and structure in crafting musical experiences that called for a new approach to scale (in Feldman’s sense) and composition (in the painterly sense). A good way to think about this piece is as a duet for violin and piano with other things happening as well.
