Conceived as a work for flute ensemble, this composition can also be performed by a single flutist with electronics—or, indeed, stitched together in a studio environment. The first three parts, for C flute, piccolo, and alto flute, respectively, build dense clusters (the first two “triangularly,” the third “rectangularly”). A final section hints at a world of alternative possibilities. This piece is dedicated to Alvin Lucier, who I had the opportunity to interact with at the 2005 June in Buffalo festival. Lucier’s work can have a beautiful “objective” quality to it that I admire greatly. In a sense, though quite different from his music, the objective/formalist/geometric aspects of this piece are a subtle nod in a Lucierian direction.
