Like Colorstudy—and like most orchestral music, really—this piece enjoys the rich palette available when writing for orchestra. In this composition, there is the building up and breaking down of big blocks of sound and also the sudden intrusion or removal of large orchestral masses. It would be accurate to think of this piece in terms of overlapping, evolving, and juxtaposed shapes—possessing various qualities of density, texture, and placement.
