I’ve used chance techniques in various ways in many of my compositions, but never quite so comprehensively as here. Cage sometimes described the composer’s role in chance pieces as one of “asking questions.” Here, I started off with certain preconceptions—about the number and types of movements, the general pitch set that would “source” the sounds—but asked questions about durations and other details. The performers throw dice to determine the order of movements.
