One has only to consider the instrumentation of this work for “solo violin” to get a sense of the immense musical impression made by my encounter with Lilit Hartunian, for whom it was explicitly written. Refreshingly free of both ego and sentimentality—but entirely infused with creativity and true depth of feeling—Lilit’s fearless and sensitive musical adventurism gave me permission to make this piece not simply a work for solo violin but a window into an unexpectedly bright though somewhat ineffable musical universe. In a sense, my feeling is that this is the creative space that Lilit already inhabits and my work as a composer was simply to give her some things to do there.
