Composed for Rob Haskins and Tom Moore, this piece has a bit more of a linear quality than much of my music. This is not to say that it’s narratological in any way. Rather, the two parts “move along together” in a somewhat more coordinated manner than much of my smaller chamber music. While each part is executed with a great deal of rhythmic flexibility and general independence, the two parts “line up” much more frequently than is typical. The piece features an approach to repetition that had been seeing increasing use in my music over the previous several years. Here, this subtly varying repetition is sometimes coordinated between the two parts while at other times each part is involved in its own repetitive field of activity. The ending features a familiar strategy: something new (here, the flutist humming and playing at the same time), repeated.
