The sounds of the toy piano and melodica might be considered not quite as refined as the sounds I have generally written for over the years. With both of these instruments there is a certain “you get what you get” quality that is both challenging and engaging. Most importantly, I like these sounds, and wanted to explore them in combination. Essentially an extended work for solo toy piano, the melodica is sometimes called upon to join in, at unison. This rejuvenates the sound—and the points when this happens, when it does not, and how long it lasts provide a certain contour to what would otherwise be a fairly sonically undifferentiated expanse.
