This piece was discovered in a folder of old music about ten years after it had been written—like a twenty-dollar bill found in the pocket of in an old pair of jeans. Similar to Meditation and Haiku, essentially a notated improvisation, the piece explores a narrow set of sounds, giving each ample space to resonate. The indication for the final chord—“play, or don’t play”—is, perhaps, a fairly novel ending strategy. Each option is equally acceptable. The idea is simple: let the player decide.
