Written for an impressive undergraduate percussionist named Brett Gallo, this is a good example of a piece that, though not flashy, is quite virtuosic. The percussionist must manage a very strict choreography, frequently has to do two very different things simultaneously, and needs to maintain a quiet poise throughout. The explicit instruction to “explore the sound” appears here, much as it did in the static sections of the 2006 work for percussion quintet. This instruction is one I feel most confident giving to a percussionist.
