RYAN VIGIL

composer and pianist

[untitled] flute, 2 pianos, 2 harps, 2 vibraphones, 2 glockenspiels, 2 percussionists

2 hours, 40 minutes
2011

It is possible to see this piece as a sort of culmination, bringing together many of the major concerns that can be seen in my music of the preceding several years—long durations; an open, uninflected approach to musical time; resonant, shifting, rhythmically independent instrumental cells; a preoccupation with matters of color, density, and texture. On the other hand, it sits amidst a general progression of pieces for varying ensembles reflecting these general preoccupations. The composition does represent something of a point of arrival in terms of my extended engagement with the flute (begun with the work for alto flute and guitar [2005], and continuing with pieces for multiple flutes [2006] and alto flute and percussion [2007]). Collaborations with flutist Kelli Kathman were particularly impactful in the years prior to the composition of this piece. It is interesting to note that, purely coincidentally, the duration of this piece is the same as my fastest marathon time.
