Composed for my dear friends and close musical conspirators David Hyun-Su Kim and Lauren Basney, this piece distills many of the ideas I had been working with in the preceding years. Although the parts are mostly rhythmically independent, they are nonetheless entirely interconnected. In the first part, the piano sound serves as a kind of “bed,” gently receiving and supporting the violin sound. Later, the roles are somewhat reversed—even as the violin plays the more active role, it is mostly just a foil for the accumulating piano arpeggio (quite the star of the show). The piece concludes with the introduction of something new (muted piano) and the simplest application of the repetitive ending strategy employed in various compositions starting with Nocturne (2001).
