In a sense a very geometric composition, this piece presents a symmetrical structure consisting of two large, balanced sound masses flanking a central section consisting of silence and alternating “murmurings.” The large sound masses are gradually built out and around a dense harmonic core—and just as gradually recede back to inactivity. The values of color, density, and texture, familiar from so much of the music of the preceding ten years or so, are central here. Some relevant aspects of the composition: strictly structured according to clock time; the instruments entering and exiting with precision but playing with rhythmic independence; overall, a soft and non-vibrato approach to sound production.
