A study in contrasts, this composition frankly alternates between sections for pitched, resonant percussion—featuring dense two-part counterpoint, extravagant melodic shapes, and taut rhythmic complexity—with sections for unpitched percussion—simple, placid, unassuming. The final section treats, as straightforwardly as possible, a final pair of contrasts: drum and cymbal; action and repose.
