An uncomplicated work for solo piano. The title refers to the aesthetic of directness and simplicity prized in the haiku genre and, perhaps, to a distant tripartite structure underlying the piece. A “captured improvisation,” the final gesture is a winking nod towards the jazz tag “April in Paris.” The introduction of a new image or idea at the end so as to potentially cast what came before in fresh light is also haiku-like.
