During my time at Yale, I was fortunate to early make the acquaintance of Lauren Basney, an extraordinary violinist with not just exceptional technical abilities, but a deeply felt musicality. I suppose she even possesses some musical bravery, which is required for the execution of the first part of this piece, written for her, especially. Although I don’t tend to think about musical form/structure in traditional terms, I do sometimes find it useful to think in terms of proportions. That the first part of this piece—very self-consistent—occupies about half of the whole creates an interesting overall experience. The ending is simple and subtractive—it just sort of goes away. A kind of “new music fadeout.”
