baritone and piano

A setting for baritone and piano of the poem of the same name by Kandinsky, from his collection Klänge (Sounds). Composed as a gift for Janet Schmalfledt, who had an enormous impact on my development as a music scholar—and who is, quite simply, one of the most delightful people anyone could ever know. I loved the lightness and humor of this poem, and simply tried to capture that in a straightforward musical setting. If the harmonic language owes something to the Second Viennese School, this might be taken as a reference to the love for this repertory shared by Janet Schmalfeldt and myself (one of many areas of definite overlap).
