Two Pianos capitalizes on the simple idea of having one piano play without pedal and the other with. In a sense, this composition extends the kind of exploration of resonances and overlapping sound profiles found in Composition (2002). The sound of one instrument “goes into” and “comes out of” the other, so to speak. Into this delicate environment are dropped a variety of gestures, isolated harmonies, rustlings. The unexpected melodicism and repetition at the end are a typical ending strategy for me.
