My first composition to utilize extended passages of rhythmic independence amongst multiple instruments. As the title implies, a calling—a gradually coming out and, ultimately, a “coming together.” It’s often been asserted that my compositional focus tends to be more in a harmonic rather than a melodic direction. In fact, to the extent that traditional musical concepts can and should be applied to this music, “counterpoint” is very much a going concern. In that regard, as this is something that seems to have popped up in my music again and again over the years, take this piece as Exhibit A.
