Two primary concerns seem to operate in this piece: an appreciation for the shimmering and resplendent quality of close harmonies executed on stringed instruments; the simple conviction that if something is worth hearing, why not listen to it over an extended period? On that second point: why be so quick to turn away to something else(?), as it were. Subtle and gradual gradations, and a block-like approach to musical construction—if even “construction” it can be called. More than any previous piece, this composition steps towards the decidedly non-narrative approach that would be a central preoccupation in so many later works.
