Here is a piece of music where I felt I was creating a “thing,” rather than a piece of music (whatever that is). Surer steps away from dramaturgy and towards a more fully present and immediate kind of sonic engagement. The main portion of the composition was written first, and, in a sense, constructed from component parts (parts harmonic, parts pizzicato, parts double-stop tremolo, etc.). The “Introduction”—expansive, even expressive—was written last, as a kind of afterthought as preamble foil.
