clarinet, and 2 violins

Three instruments, three short movements. This work stands in line with Three Short Movements for Orchestra (1997), and various later compositions, as an essay in simplicity, clarity, and economy. The first movement is a kind of modernist tocatta-arabesque with an obvious debt to certain movements by Schoenberg and Webern. The second and third movements are both strongly influenced by the music of Ligeti and Lutoslawski. The second is a straightforward and gentle sonic exploration; the third, a kind of popcorn fête.
