Composed at a time when I was exploring the music and ideas of Pierre Boulez, Music for Eleven is, in a certain sense, one large crescendo building towards a section featuring a rhythm taken from Fumio Hayasaka’s score to The Severn Samurai. Throughout the compositional process, I enjoyed thinking of all of the instruments as, essentially, percussion instruments.
