The musical miniature is a fascinating entity—both a challenge and an opportunity. Many who know my more recent, long-form works, are surprised to encounter select compositions over the years that prize concision, economy, and effect. Following a juvenile work for string orchestra (Three Pieces for Strings, lots of them—many, many strings [1995]), this piece continues an exploration that would eventually include several short piano works and Eight Very Short Pieces for Orchestra (2012).
