clarinet, guitar, and double bass

As has so often been the case, this composition began with the instrumentation. The idea of writing for this combination of instruments came before any concrete musical ideas. With so many intriguing possibilities, plenty of ideas soon came. The long “chorale” section at the end—just a simple melody, really—overshadows all that precedes. I liked the idea of changing the terms of the composition by doing something unrelated to anything that came before, and, in the process, casting new light on the composition as a whole.
