Rain at the eaves just right for sleeping . . .

When work on this solo piano piece was about half complete Toru Takemitsu passed away. The piece already contained a subtle quotation from Takemitsu’s music—the first chord of his Rain Tree Sketch, no. 1. At this moment it became clear that the piece should become an homage to that great composer. More than the influence of Takemitsu, the piece betrays the impact that Marti Epstein’s music had on me at that time. One of my first compositions to eschew barlines, the open approach to time is an early indication of what would be a sustained preoccupation with free, unmetered approaches to musical time.
